Games FAQ

Are the NZ Masters Games only for senior citizens?

No. The minimum age is as young as 25 for some events, and is 30 or 35 for most other sports. Although there will be a good number of athletes in their sixties and seventies - and beyond - at the Games, three-quarters of the masters athletes are under 55.

Do I have to be an accomplished athlete, or go through qualifying competition to enter?

No. The NZ Masters Games are for athletes of all skill levels. The only qualification is meeting the minimum age requirement. Team sports offer competition in elite and recreational grades, so you’ll play with people at your level. Though world age-category records may be set, you'll also feel comfortable just trying for a personal best.

How old do I have to be to enter?

it varies considerably betwen sports, but you can compete from as young as 25 in some events. Sports registration information on this site lists all age groups and categories.

Why are there different minimum ages and age categories for each sports?

Each sport is governed by a federation or governing body that sets competition rules and standards. Masters sport is the bridge between youth or elite competition and competition for other stages of life. Each federation or governing body sets minimum ages and age categories that work best with the nature of the sport and the athletes who participate in it.

Can I enter more than one sport?

Yes. Scheduling conflicts can affect playing schedules for some sports so please check the registration book carefully or the timetable on this site.

How can I find information about accommodation?

Please contact the masters games office for more information.
